Today’s competitive academic environment puts increasing demands on students to spend greater and greater amounts of time in the classroom, and less time pursuing other activities. Outdoor education helps develop life skills that cannot be gained in the classroom and contributes significantly to personal all-round development. In fact, these ‘out of classroom’ experiences can actually help increase the capacity for academic learning by encouraging different approaches for thinking about and solving problems. Outdoor programs instill in students a sense of responsibility, assist them in building trust, self confidence and a strong sense of team spirit. An additional benefit of outdoor education is that students learn to enjoy, respect and care for the natural environment. I.O. has specific courses designed for different activities, durations and group age/ability. I.O. will also happily work with you to custom design a course to meet your goals/needs. Please refer to the following menu to choose your course or get ideas to custom design your own.
Start an extra-curricular outdoor club at your school. I.O. will help you organize it! Students join in regular weekly activities after school (1 or 2 afternoons/week) and venture out on multi-day or weekend courses when time permits (e.g.: once a term/semester).
Challenge and Adventure Both of these terms invoke an element of the unknown, the unusual, something exciting, even risky, which demands great effort. When we are taken out of our comfort zone we are invited to test our limits and discover our strengths. To embrace the unknown is to be able to adapt readily in the face of adversity. We move beyond personal apprehensions and fears in order to grow into our innate abilities.
Enjoy a one-time course with I.O. From 1 day to 14 days, these intensives promise a fun-filled, educational experience your students will always remember.
Incorporate outdoor leadership into the academic curriculum on a term or full year basis. Students receive academic credit and follow I.O.’s curriculum/testing in rock climbing & bouldering, hiking & camping, whitewater rafting & kayaking, navigation, first aid & basic rescue, cultural & environmental education.
